Favorite Lyrics – The Fixer

This song is a little heavy on the ‘yeah’s, but they are fun to sing (read: scream) along to when you’re listening, so I left them in this lyrics transcription. They really help to set the mood of the tune. Plus, that’s just the way Eddie Vedder sings a lot of his upbeat tunes, and Pearl Jam’s “The Fixer” is no exception.

I can really relate to this song. I love to help. I love to cheer people up. I love to try to fix things when they’re not right. But mostly, I love…

~ ~ ~

yeah, hey, hey
When something’s dark, let me shed a little light on it
When something’s cold, let me put a little fire on it
If something’s old, I wanna put a bit of shine on it
When something’s gone, I wanna fight to get it back again

yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Fight to get it back again
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

When something’s broke, I wanna put a bit of fixin’ on it
When something’s bored, I wanna put a little exciting on it
If something’s low, I wanna put a little high on it
When something’s lost, I wanna fight to get it back again

yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Fight to get it back again
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

When signals cross, I wanna put a little straight on it
If there’s no love, I wanna try to love again

I’ll say your prayers, I’ll take your side
I’ll find us a way to make light
I’ll dig your grave, we’ll dance and sing
What’s saved could be one last lifetime

hey, hey, hey
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Fight to get it back again
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Fight to get it back again
yeah, yeah, yeah

Fight to get it back again
yeah, yeah, yeah
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

A Horrible Interruption

I’m sure some of you have caught this already, but it’s too good not to post.  And if you have seen it already, it’s certainly worth a second (or third) viewing.

Last week, Neil Patrick Harris hosted the Emmy Awards.  At one point in the broadcast, Dr. Horrible interrupted the broadcast.

For those of you keeping track at home, this is the link that I was referring to yesterday.

Sometimes My Mind is of the One-Track Variety

Ack!  I have two things that I want to blog about, but I can’t do either of them right now.  One requires a picture that has yet to be taken and the other requires a link that is sitting on a computer that I can’t get to right now.

I could write something else funny and original or maybe thought provoking, but nope.  I want to share a picture and/or a video with you and now that has put my brain into a special kind of writer’s block where all I can think of is that picture and that video.  At least they are both pretty cool.  It’s a nice place to have my mind stuck right now.

Please Leave – Haiku

I have no problem
with you, little moth.  Except
when you’re in my grill.

Thanks To My Family

I want to take a minute (and this blog entry) to thank everyone who spent this last weekend with me, celebrating my birthday.  It was incredible and the last time I can remember feeling that happy and having so much fun for my birthday was during one of my birthday celebrations when I was a little kid.  The only thing missing was a new Transformers toy, though we did have a relatively new Nerf gun.

So, big thanks to my family, my two closest friends, and my girlfriend for spending the weekend at my house celebrating my start of another year.  Actually, I’m going to change that last sentence to be: So, big thanks to my family for spending the weekend at my house.  Don’t let the omission of a few words fool you into thinking that only my blood relatives joined in on the celebration.  My two best friends and my girlfriend were still there, but the word “family” is meant to include them, too.  Labeling them “friend” or “girlfriend” doesn’t come close to explaining how important they are to me and how much better my life is because they are in it.  For all intents and purposes they are family.  I love each of them like family.  By any definition of the word they are family.  Okay, maybe not this definition:

13. a unit of the Mafia or Cosa Nostra operating in one area under a local leader.  (via dictionary.com)

I Just Got To Write This

I enjoy writing.  I like finding new and interesting ways to convey and phrase things.  I like leading the reader down one path only to have a little twist in the story at the end.  I especially enjoy having a vague, seemingly unrelated title that makes sense only after the reader takes in the final sentence.  I’ve been blogging now for over five years and I think that my writing skills have improved quite a lot over that span of time.  Yet, there are still a few areas where I want to improve.  I have some writing crutches that I always use, even though I know they aren’t exactly correct or preferred.  There are two of them specifically that really bother me.

Just:  I use the word ‘just’ way too often.  Most of the time I use it correctly, but I use it where it’s not necessary.  In fact, I had to fight myself not to use it in that last sentence.  Usually, I don’t need the added emphasis that the word provides.  It’s just filler; a tick in my writing style.  I have been working hard to limit it’s use and save the word for when it’s actually providing some real benefit to the sentence it’s in.

Got:  I have destroyed this word over the years.  I use it far too often and unlike “just”, I generally use “got” incorrectly.  There is almost always a better, more preferred word that could be used.  While “got” may be accepted in many of these cases, it is quite often grammatically wrong.  One of the situations where I catch myself utterly failing with “got” is when it’s just redundancies.  Take this sentence: “I’ve got to see that!”  Expanding the contraction changes the sentence to: “I have got to see that!”  The word “got” is just not needed here.  “I have to see that!” is all that’s required for it to be a clean sentence that makes it’s point.

I realize now that this was likely a very boring entry.  Who wants to read about grammar?  I’m sure that some people might want to, but those people probably aren’t coming to this blog to get their grammar fix.  Maybe this particular entry is a little self-serving.  By writing about these two things I’m working on, I’ve forced myself to think about them more.  Also, it allows you, dear reader, to know what I’m trying to do and call me out on my missteps in the comments when I make these “mistakes” in future blog entries.  Consider that your free pass to tell me that I’m wrong.  But please, you got to promise to just do it when I use “got” and “just”.

This Is Why Santa Checks His Twice

Yesterday I had several errands to run.  Errands that would take me to not one, not two, not even three, or amazingly four, but five different locations on my way home from work.  Due to all the stops and all the different items I needed to pick up, I made a list.  Unless I’m doing a full-on grocery run, I usually don’t need a list.  I know why I’m stopping at the one or two stores and usually I’m just picking up one or two things at those stores.  But with five different stops and over a dozen separate items to pick up, I knew a list was necessary.

You know what’s also necessary?  Using the list.  After my first three stops went smashingly well, I left the list in the car.  I figured I was in the home stretch, having already purchased the vast majority of what I needed to purchase.  I didn’t think it was at all possible for me to forget one of the last three things that I needed, especially when all three of these items had been on the list since it was just a tiny list in my head and didn’t need to be written out.  Unfortunately, I was a bit too confident in my ability to remember three things after over an hour of running errands and a full day at work.  I walked out of the store with only two of the three items.  I even confidently walked to my car, knowing (thinking) that I had remembered everything on my list.  It wasn’t until I arrived at home and was emptying my shopping bags that I realized I had slipped up and didn’t successfully get everything on my list.

And so I sit here writing this entry with a stomach that craves for the chocolate chip granola bar that I do not own.
